Powell sparks Lakers’ winning rally

GC parlays late, 9-0 run into season’s first conference victory

Lamont Powell scored 7 of his 15 points Wednesday night in a 9-0 run that powered Garrett College to an 86-81 men’s basketball victory over host Anne Arundel Community College.

With the Lakers facing a 76-72 deficit, Powell converted a pair of free throws and then hit consecutive jumpers to put GC ahead to stay. Tyler Rodeheaver then made a layup and Powell hit the second of 2 free throws to give GC an 81-76 lead.

AACC twice pulled within 2 points, the final time on a dunk by Rashod Ballard (22 points) with 16 seconds remaining that cut the Riverhawks’ deficit to 83-81. Darius Jones (15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 14 seconds to lock up the victory.

Rodeheaver tied for game-high scoring honors with 22 points as the Lakers (10-8 overall, 1-7 league) claimed their first Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference win of the season. Powell, Jones, Kobe Tigney (15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists), and Jhaiden Wilson (10 points) also reached double figures for the Lakers.

GC got off to a fast start, taking an 8-0 lead as Wilson and Tigney hit 3-pointers and Rodeheaver converted a layup. The Riverhawks, however, bounced back to take a 35-34 halftime lead on Ballard’s tie-breaking free throw.

The Lakers again started quickly in the second half, scoring the first 6 points as Wilson nailed a 3-pointer, and Jones hit a layup and split a pair of free throws.

Anne Arundel (7-10, 1-8) again rallied, using a 6-2 spurt to break a 70-70 tie as Kanari Smith converted a 3-point play and Ballard chipped in 3 points. The Lakers, however, responded with their Powell-led, game-winning surge.
