Levi Foy (left) and Nathan Foy (right) work together as a team to build a LEGO Sumo-wrestling robot. The Foys were among 40 homeschool students that recently attended a series of several Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) courses at Garrett College in the new STEM Building.

Students were able to discover what makes a machine a robot, and learn what all robots have in common. Teams created their own LEGO Sumo-wrestling robot and had fun engineering improvements and observing which changes were the most effective. Students were able to test their robots against one another for performance in the competition ring.

Phil Malone instructed two courses: ‘Essential Robots’ for ages 6-10 and ‘Engineering and Robotics’ for ages 11-18. Malone is a mentor for youth robotics teams in Garrett County and founder of GEARS robotics center in Accident. He has more than 25 years’ experience in the robotics field.
