Third-seeded Lakers draw host Cecil in regionals

Region tournament is national qualifier for Division II hoop squads

Third-seeded Garrett College will play sixth-seeded host Cecil College in Friday's 4 p.m. quarterfinal in the NJCAA Division II Region XX men's basketball tournament.

If their regular-season meeting is any indication, Friday's quarterfinal should be highly competitive. Cecil built a 10-point halftime lead and then held on to edge the Lakers, 86-84, on January 23rd at GC.

The winner of Friday's GC-Cecil quarterfinal meets the winner of Friday's 6 p.m. quarterfinal between second-seeded Beaver County Community College and seventh-seeded Montgomery College in Saturday's 6 p.m. semifinal. The tournament title game will be play on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The other half of the draw features Friday quarterfinals between No. 1 Potomac State College and No. 8 Chesapeake College at 2 p.m. after fourth-seeded Frederick Community College and fifth-seeded Northern Virginia Community College open the tournament with a noon quarterfinal.

The PSC-Chesapeake winner will take on the FCC-NVCC winner in Saturday's 4 p.m. semifinal.

The injury-riddled Lakers hope to get sophomore forward Elisha Kidd, sophomore guard Devin Wilkerson, and sophomore guard Kia Thompson back for the regional tournament. Kidd, Wilkerson and Thompson – who average about 33 points per game – all missed GC's near-upset against the region's top team, Potomac State College (26-1), last week.

On the women's side, top-seeded Chesapeake College (17-5) is seeking its sixth region championship in the last eight years.
