Tucker's double-double drowns Riverhawks

Freshman forward finishes with 18 points, 14 rebounds

Aliyah Tucker scored 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds Wednesday afternoon as the Lakers rolled to their seventh straight win, a 76-32 victory over Anne Arundel Community College.

The Lakers finished the first quarter on an 8-0 streak to break an 8-8 tie. GC then blew the game wide open with a 16-0, second-quarter run.

Garrett College improved to 12-2 overall, including 5-2 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference, with the win.

Jersey Wise (17 points, 8 rebounds), Harmoni Swain (16 points, 5 rebounds), and Josie Canales (14 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 6 steals) joined Tucker in double figures. Josias Mickens added 7 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Shay Barlow contributed 4 points and 4 rebounds off the bench.

Syrena Boone was the only Riverhawk in double figures, scoring 18 points and corralling 15 rebounds. Boone helped AACC get off to a good start, scoring the Riverhawks’ first 5 points, and teammate Jada Turner nailed a 3-pointer that created an 8-8 tie with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter.

From there, it was pretty much all Lakers.

Tucker broke the 8-8 tie with a layup and Barlow followed with a layup off a Wise assist. Canales added consecutive layups as the Lakers finished the quarter with their 8-0 surge.

The Riverhawks (2-14, 1-8) were still within 16-13 when GC reeled off 16 straight points to take command. Mickens had 5 points, including a 3-pointer, during the run while Canales added 2 layups and Wise drained a trey.

GC had a 39-16 halftime advantage.
