Our Students and Alumni Pursue Incredible Journeys

All of our students have a unique story to tell. Many start out at Garrett College with plans to transfer to a four-year college or university. A large percentage of our students are the first in their family to attend college. Others seek to advance their career by learning a new skill.

These stories represent journeys of overcoming personal challenges, defining and achieving success, and discovering true passions.

Question: Why did you choose Garrett College?
Answer: Being close to where I live, GC had the major I would like to pursue and has very great courses that I enjoy taking. I also chose to start my degree at Garrett College because I attended Northern High School and upon getting my diploma, I was offered a grant to attend Garrett College.

Question: Did COVID-19 impact your college decisions at all? If so, how?
Answer: Normally I prefer to be in class in person, however a lot of my required courses were not offered in-person, so I have had to take a lot of online classes, which I did not think I would be good at. I am finding I am surprisingly good, as well as discovering that there are many advantages to online courses. For example, I can learn at a good pace and have free-time without having to drive to the college to attend in person classes.

Question: How is your semester going so far?
Answer: My semester is going great! I really enjoy my classes and every day I realize that I am closer to pursuing my passions than I was the day before. At the start of each semester I find it a little bit difficult to organize my home-life, work and school, but with schedule planning I have found efficient ways to fit everything in!

Question: What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?
Answer: I have faced the challenges of having to balance everything in my life to create a successful outcome. I have overcome them by allowing myself time to complete assignments, as well as, planning for when I will have time to do so.

Question: What advice do you have for a new GC student or someone on the fence about attending college?
Answer: Use your time wisely. College is a great resource to help you get where you want to be in life. Not only do you learn skills that pertain to your major, you learn life-skills like planning, scheduling, coping skills and social skills.

Question: What are your plans after GC?
Answer: I plan to transfer to Frostburg State University to complete a bachelor's degree in psychology. Once I have completed this degree, I plan to continue my education at FSU to earn a master’s degree in clinical counseling.
