Our Students and Alumni Pursue Incredible Journeys
All of our students have a unique story to tell. Many start out at Garrett College with plans to transfer to a four-year college or university. A large percentage of our students are the first in their family to attend college. Others seek to advance their career by learning a new skill.
These stories represent journeys of overcoming personal challenges, defining and achieving success, and discovering true passions.

Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Kathy, I’m 62 years old, married and I work at Mountain Haven Wellness and Recovery Center as a coordinator.
For many years, after quitting high school, it had been my goal to obtain my diploma. Life took a different direction with many personal struggles and trying to raise a family, my goal was forgotten.
After a while, I came to realize that it was time to pursue my dream! I enrolled in ABE classes through Garrett Community College. With work and family being a huge role in my busy life the ABE classes helped me score high enough to enroll in the National Diploma Program, (NEDP).
In March of 2020, I was on my way to learning new skills that I never thought were possible, with very little computer knowledge. For example, making a Power Point or learning how to take a screen shot. With the pandemic at its height, the classes started with learning to use ZOOM, another skill I’d use at my job.
