37 Lakers named to NJCAA All-Academic Teams

Baseball claims sport’s highest team region grade-point average

Garrett College led NJCAA Region 20 by averaging 5.3 NJCAA All-Academic Team members over its seven intercollegiate sports.

There were 37 Lakers named to NJCAA All-Academic teams, which was the third-highest total among the 23 NJCAA Region 20 members. Harford Community College (45 All-Academic Team members over nine sports for a 5.0 average per sport) finished with the highest number of student athletes honored while WVU Potomac State College (42 All-Academic Team members over 12 sports for a 3.5 average per sport) was second in raw headcount.

“Our student-athletes continue to prove that excellence isn’t measured solely by what happens in competition, but by the commitment they demonstrate every day in the classroom,” said Elizabeth Show, Garrett College’s director of athletic operations. “Earning NJCAA All-Academic honors reflects the discipline, perseverance, and character of these outstanding individuals.”

The Lakers had the highest team Grade-Point Average (3.32) among the region’s baseball programs. Garrett College’s women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams each finished with a 3.09 team GPA, good for second and third, respectively, among the region’s women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams.

One Laker – baseball pitcher Kyle Schofield – made the NJCAA All-Academic first team with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Nineteen Lakers made the second team while 16 made third team.

Show noted these accomplishments were truly a GC team achievement.

“We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and grateful to our coaches, faculty, and staff who support them in achieving success both academically and athletically,” said Show.
