GC sweeps past three straight opponents

Lady Lakers top Beaver, sweep tri-match with Carroll, Chesapeake

Hampstead, MD – The Lady Lakers are on a roll.

Garrett College’s women’s volleyball team swept host Community College of Beaver County last Monday and then blew past Carroll Community College and Chesapeake College in Saturday’s tri-match at Carroll. The strong week allowed the Lady Lakers to even their record at 4-4.

“It was just a great day of volleyball for us,” said GC head coach Beth Campbell after the Lady Lakers pulled off their first tri-match sweep of the season. “They’ve had a really great attitude and are working really well together.”

Garrett 3, Chesapeake 0

Kyla Gilbert had a match-high 13 kills in the 25-11, 25-17, 25-15 sweep of Chesapeake. Mia Barrios added nine kills and Teyla Holloway-Powers registered six aces in the win.

Macyn Miller led Chesapeake with six kills while Kaylee Sockriter had nine of the Lady Skipjacks’ 12 assists. Sockriter, Montana Davis, and Emma Brewer each had nine digs for Chesapeake (3-7).

Garrett 3, Carroll 0

Barrios and Gilbert also led the attack against Carroll, notching 12 and 11 kills, respectively, in the 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 victory. Serenity Parker and Kaitlyn Bender each had two aces for the Lady Lakers.

“I’m super-proud of how they’ve come together and how they back each other up,” said Campbell, who also praised the Lady Lakers’ supportive bench. “We have things to work on, but they’re very open to working on them.”

Garrett hosts Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Thursday at 6 p.m. in the team’s “Pink Game,” recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

GC 3, Beaver Co. 0

Monaca, PA – Kyla Gilbert had match-highs in kills (11) and digs (10) while Teyla Holloway-Powers led GC with 21 assists and four aces as the Lady Lakers defeated Beaver, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19.

Kaitlyn Bender finished with nine kills and was one of three GC players – the others being Gilbert and Mia Barrios – to notch two aces.
