Alonso Garcia’s hat trick sparks Lakers

GC evens soccer record at 4-4 with 6-0 win over Beaver County

McHenry, MD – Lucas Alonso Garcia’s hat trick propelled Garrett College to a 6-0 men’s soccer victory last Thursday against visiting Community College of Beaver County.

Jack Ferguson scored twice and Darius Hamilton added a goal as the Lakers evened their record at 4-4. Garrett finished with a 23-3 shots advantage, scoring on six of seven shots on goal, and had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

“We tried to focus on possessing the ball, moving it quickly, and getting it into places where we could just turn and shoot,” said GC head coach Logan Turner.

Alonso Garcia scored GC’s first two goals, the first off a Ben Lohr assist, and Ferguson scored off a Chris Manherz feed with just 1:04 remaining in the first half to give GC a 3-0 halftime lead.

Hamilton tallied his sixth goal of the season to start the second-half scoring, courtesy of a Bela Kenneweg assist. Alonso Garcia then finished off his hat trick with his sixth goal of the season to make it 5-0.

Ferguson scored his fourth goal of the year with 17:25 left to complete the scoring. Turner said having three dependable scorers in Alonso Garcia, Hamilton, and Ferguson has made the Lakers’ offense particularly dangerous.

“We can score from just about anywhere,” said Turner.

GC’s improving defense notched its first shutout of the year as goaltenders Wyatt Hull and Brady Spotts split the shutout.

“We’ve improved a lot defensively,” said Turner. “That’s important – it sets the foundation for everything else.”

CCBC dropped to 0-3-1 with the loss.

Garrett was scheduled to host Hagerstown Community College on Tuesday and plays at Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville Thursday at 5 p.m.

Harford 2, GC 0

Bel Air, MD – Simon Bauer and Liam Henebery each scored in the final five minutes of the first half last Tuesday to lead the Fighting Owls to the 2-0 win.

Harford finished with a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal, but GC goalkeeper Wyatt Hull made 14 saves to keep the Lakers in the contest.

Louka Chainey needed to make just one save to record the shutout for Harford.

Women’s Soccer

PSC 3, Garrett 0

Keyser, WV – Neveah Church had a goal and an assist last Saturday as West Virginia University-Potomac State College shut out the visiting Lady Lakers, 3-0.

Church scored 21:08 into the contest to give the Catamounts a 1-0 halftime lead. Haleigh Hyre and Kylie Ross scored just 2:10 apart in the second half to help Potomac State break the game open.

Shayla Bennett stopped three shots to earn the shutout for the Catamounts while GC netminder Payton Finley had five saves in the loss. Potomac State (2-5-1) finished with a 13-4 edge in total shots and 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Garrett dropped to 0-8 on the season.

Harford 6, GC 0

Bel Air, MD – Ami Walters scored twice last Tuesday as five different Fighting Owls scored in a 6-0 win.

Lila Vincenti and Victoria Mendez each notched a goal and an assist. Harford finished with a 55-1 shots advantage and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.

Fighting Owls netminders Alyssa Dunnigan and Olivia Wollschlager shared the shutout. Payton Finley made 23 saves in goal for Garrett.
