GC blows out Allegany for 7th straight win
Lakers, now 7-0 at home, club 4 homers in windy environment
To say Garrett College's baseball contest Thursday against visiting Allegany College of Maryland was a hitter's game would be a vast understatement.
"If you got the ball in the air, it had a chance of getting out," observed GC head coach Eric Hallenbeck after his Lakers used four homers and 15 hits to pound ACM, 19-10, and extend their winning streak to seven games.
Aiden Screen (three runs, two RBI) had two home runs while Laker teammates Jesus Fermin and Meyer Cabrera each homered once. Noah Broadwater (2-for-2, four walks, double two runs, RBI) reached base in all six of his at bats and Grayden Gillott (3-for-3, two walks, double, two runs, four RBI) was on base five times for GC.
"We took what they gave us as far as free bases [12]," observed Hallenbeck. "When they did throw strikes, we squared the baseball up and made solid contact."
Allegany (12-10 overall, 7-4 Region 20 West) used a four-run third, sparked by Manuel Cartagena's three-run homer, to take a 5-3 lead. The Lakers, however, built a five-run response in the home third centered around a three-run homer by Cabrera (2-for-4, three runs, four RBI) to take the lead for good.
GC (14-5, 10-0) broke the game open with a seven-run fourth that stretched the lead to 15-6. The fourth-inning explosion featured a two-run single by Fermin (2-for-5, two runs, four RBI) right after the Trojans pitched around Broadwater, eventually walking the Lakers' star shortstop.
"That's a good win that keeps our momentum going," said Hallenbeck, whose squad has won 10 of its last 12 games. The Lakers are unbeaten both at home (7-0).
While five GC pitchers combined to give up eight hits and five walks, Hallenbeck was generally pleased with his pitchers' performances.
"I thought we pitched better than we have in the last few games. With the wind blowing out like it was, it's kind of tough to hold anyone down," he observed. "Six of their 10 runs came on homers."
Tristan Farnworth, the third Laker pitcher, earned the win while allowing two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Notes: Garrett is averaging 20 runs per game over the last three games, and 15.1 runs during its seven-game winning streak. The Lakers are currently second in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference standings behind Harford Community College (25-3 overall, 12-0 MD JUCO) at 9-2.
Broadwater is now batting .508 with 38 RBI, both of which currently lead NJCAA Division II Region 20.
The Lakers host Frederick Community College (12-6 overall, 4-2 Region 20-West) in a 1 p.m. Sunday doubleheader and Division I West Virginia University Potomac State College Monday in a nine-inning single game at 4 p.m.
