Lady Lakers clinch winning volleyball season
Garrett sweeps BCCC; drops dramatic five-setter to Howard CC
Baltimore, MD – Garrett College clinched a winning women’s volleyball season in Beth Campbell’s first year as head coach last Saturday as the Lady Lakers swept host Baltimore City Community College as part of a tri-match to close out the regular season.
GC defeated winless Baltimore City, 25-8, 25-21, 25-9, in the Lady Lakers’ first match of the day. Howard then held off Garrett in a five-set marathon, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 16-14.
Garrett – with eight freshmen on an 11-player roster – won eight of its final 11 matches to finish the regular season with a 9-7 record.
“They really had a great year,” said Campbell. “Our three sophomores [Mia Barrios, Serenity Parker, and April Etheridge] were great at bringing the freshmen in, taking them under their wings and getting them acclimated to being here.”
Campbell said another thing that helped the freshmen was being on campus for a two-week preseason before the fall semester started.
“That allowed them to bond,” said Campbell. “They spent a lot of time together during those two weeks when it was only soccer and volleyball players on campus.”
Campbell said the Lady Lakers had plenty of fans make the trip to Baltimore for the tri-match, which has been the story of their season.
“We had so many fans that followed us everywhere, which is really impressive,” said Campbell. “My players are from all over, but we had more fans at most of the places we played than the home teams.”
The Lady Lakers will be playing in the postseason for the third consecutive year, with a home NJCAA Division II Region 20 play-in match tentatively set for next Tuesday night.
“We’re super-excited about making the playoffs,” said Campbell.
Garrett 3, Baltimore City 0
Kyla Gilbert had a match-high 11 kills to go along with four aces versus Baltimore City. Keyla Holloway-Powers recorded 13 aces, three kills, and four assists, while Mia Barrios contributed five kills and four aces against the Panthers.
Howard 3, Garrett 2
While GC rolled over Baltimore City, the Howard match was tight throughout. After five sets and 216 points, only six points separated the two squads.
“That’s the seven and eight seeds playing each other – and that’s how tight those two teams were,” Campbell observed.
Kyla Gilbert (26 kills, 27 digs, four assists, one ace), Barrios (33 digs, 14 kills, five assists, four aces), Teyla Holloway-Powers (43 assists, 16 digs, four kills), Isabella Keneally (23 digs), and Parker (18 digs) all put up big numbers in the Howard loss. Lady Lakers Olivia Bartlett and Etheridge each added six kills.
