Lakers split a pair of men’s soccer matches

Hamilton scores twice in Cecil win before Altoona edges Lakers, 2-1

Garrett 4, Cecil 2

North East, MD – Darius Hamilton scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season last Thursday as the Garrett College men’s soccer team defeated host Cecil College, 4-2.

Hamilton scored the first two goals of the game and Jack Ferguson made it 3-0 off an Elija Zapata assist just 32:15 into the contest. The Seahawks closed within 3-2 on goals by Luis Petavy and Aymeric Daut, but Lucas Alonso Garcia’s tally off a free kick with 14 minutes left sealed the win.

GC goaltender Wyatt Hull made 15 saves as Cecil finished with a 17-15 shots-on-goal advantage.

Penn State Altoona 2, Garrett 1

The Lakers (3-3) started slowly in a 2-1 loss last Saturday to Penn State University-Altoona. GC fell behind 2-0 in the game’s first 19 minutes and couldn’t catch the Nittany Lions despite dominating the second half.

Altoona applied strong offensive pressure virtually from the opening kickoff. That pressure paid off when Leandro Sarao looped a pass from the left wing to Jayson Ireland near the right-top corner of the box. Ireland one-touched a shot past Hull to give Altoona a 1-0 lead just 13 minutes into the game.

Sarao set up Ireland for another goal with 26 minutes remaining in the first half. Sarao sent a pass up the middle to a streaking Ireland, who put the ball inside the right corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Garrett cut the deficit in half with 20 minutes remaining in the contest. Chris Manherz made a run down the left side, beat the only defender back, and pushed the ball into the near left corner of the goal.

The Lakers, who dominated the second half, created several solid game-tying opportunities, but couldn’t convert. Two of the best were shots by Manherz and Hamilton that each went just over the crossbar.

“I thought we played well in the second half,” said GC interim head coach Logan Turner.

Women’s Soccer

La Roche 5, Garrett 0

McHenry, MD – Mackenzie Mars and Emma Cameron each scored twice, and Cadence King added a goal Saturday in NCAA Division III La Roche University’s 5-0 victory.

Cali Coups and Danielle Dominick shared the shutout as each made two stops while splitting halves in goal for La Roche.

Payton Finley stopped 10 of 15 shots in goal for winless GC (0-6).

La Roche finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots and 5-2 edge in corners.

CCBC-Essex 8, Garrett 0

Essex, MD – Aubrey O’Connell scored four goals last Tuesday as the Knights stayed unbeaten, 8-0.

Payton Finley made 13 saves in goal for Garrett. Essex goaltender Allyson Foos stopped the only shot she faced to earn the shutout.

Women’s Volleyball

Montgomery 3, Garrett 1

North East, MD – Sofia Mateshuk had 18 kills and Ladae Clark added 13 last Saturday as Montgomery College defeated Garrett College, 20-25, 25-12, 25-21, 29-27.

Kyla Gilbert registered 12 kills and 23 digs while Teyla Holloway-Powers had 23 assists with three aces and 12 digs for GC.

Cecil 3, Garrett 0

North East, MD – Kendra Watters notched 13 kills last Saturday in Cecil’s 25-12, 25-16, 25-9 sweep.

Kyla Gilbert finished with four kills, three aces, and seven digs for the Lady Lakers (1-4). Kaitlyn Bender also had seven digs and Teyla Holloway-Powers recorded eight assists.
