Prince George’s hands Lakers soccer setback

Owls build 3-0 lead on way to win; Hamilton has GC’s only goal

McHenry, MD – Jose Reyes had two goals and Abraham Tarawallie added one last Thursday as the Prince George’s Community College men’s soccer team defeated host Garrett College, 3-1.

The Owls scored all of their goals in the first half while building a 3-0 lead. Darius Hamilton had GC’s only goal, which was set up by Chris Manherz.

The Lakers play at Cecil College Thursday at 5 p.m. and host Penn State University-Altoona Saturday at noon.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

ACM 7, Garrett 1

Cumberland, MD – Allie Knieriem scored four goals while Nevaeh Bunbasi had two goals and an assist last Tuesday in Allegany College of Maryland’s victory.

Ava Hunt tallied GC’s only goal off ACM goalkeeper Rebekah Costal, who stopped eight of nine shots.

Garrett matched ACM’s 15 shots and had an 8-3 shots advantage in the first half, but trailed 2-0 at halftime on goals by Bunbasi and Knieriem.

“We had as many shots and more corners,” observed GC head coach Zach Ward, whose team finished with a 5-1 edge in corners. “They took advantage of their chances; unfortunately, we did not.”

PG 2, Garrett 0

McHenry, MD – Genevy Funez and Sarah Alleyne scored unassisted, first-half goals last Thursday as the Owls edged Garrett College.

“It was a tale of two halves for us,” said GC head coach Zach Ward. “We had a rough opening half, but completely flipped the script in the second half. I was really pleased with the effort in the second half. I’m looking for that effort each time out the rest of the season.”

PG finished with a 27-4 shots advantage, but Lady Lakers goalkeeper Payton Finley turned aside 15 of the Owls’ 17 shots on goal. Prince George’s netminder Rosa Reyes-Reyes made one save to earn the shutout.

The Lady Lakers host NCAA Division III La Roche University Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
