Wye Mills, MD – The Lakers appear to be peaking just in time for the playoffs.

Garrett College's baseball team swept host Chesapeake College, 9-6 and 21-9, Monday afternoon as sophomore standout Noah Broadwater went 7-for-8 and drove in 10 runs. The Lakers (24-11 overall, 16-4 Region 20) pounded out 27 hits in just 12 innings, including a 10-run fourth that broke open the nightcap.

"We really swung the bats well," said GC head coach Eric Hallenbeck, whose squad has won three straight and six of its last seven games. "I don't think I ever remember a time we've swept Chesapeake at Chesapeake."

Broadwater (4-for-4, six RBI) set the tone early, hitting a three-run, first-inning homer to put the Lakers ahead to stay in the opener. He singled in a second-inning run and drilled a two-run double as part of a three-run fifth that gave the Lakers a 9-4 lead.

Aiden Screen had two hits, including a triple, and drove in a run for the Lakers, who finished with 11 hits in the opener.

GC reliever Greg Eddy earned the victory, allowing just one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings while striking out four.

Sebastian Mayfield swung an impressive bat in the nightcap, delivering a two-run single as part of a five-run first and adding an RBI hit in a four-run second as the Lakers blew out to a 9-2 lead. Broadwater and Ethan Earley had two-run singles and Screen added a two-run double as part of a 10-run fourth that made it 19-8.

Jesus Fermin's two-run homer in the fifth capped GC's 30-run doubleheader performance.

Kai Canson pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, to earn the Game 2 win.

Chesapeake fell to 12-18 overall and 8-13 in the region.

GC started its latest winning streak with a 23-2 thumping of host Montgomery College (20-13, 13-4) in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader after dropping a 13-3 decision in the opener.

Screen and Mayfield each hit grand slams as part of an 11-run first that pretty much decided Saturday's nightcap. Conner Blake (3-for-3, three runs, six RBI) and Juan Parrau also homered for the Lakers.

Hunter Dakan (5-1) threw three shutout innings, allowing one hit while striking out three, to earn the win.

"We're playing well on the road and scoring a bunch of runs," said Hallenbeck. "Hopefully we're peaking at the right time, right before playoffs. We've been getting a lot of contributions from a lot of different people, which is another good sign."

Notes: GC is in second place in the 15-team NJCAA Division II Region 20, trailing only first-place CCBC-Essex (27-9, 18-2). The Lakers host Essex Sunday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader after hosting Westmoreland County (PA) Community College (20-13, 10-10) Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Between games of the Westmoreland doubleheader, the Lakers' First United Community Field will be dedicated. The dedication ceremony is expected to start at approximately 2:30 p.m.
