Balance generally beats brilliance in college men’s basketball.

That was certainly the case Saturday afternoon when Garrett College started the 2026 portion of its schedule. Zamar Jones had a game-high 21 points for visiting Anne Arundel Community College, but Keyonta Johnson (six rebounds, four assists, three steals), Petar Kos (six rebounds), and Cory Harper (four 3-pointers) each scored 14 points as the Lakers built a 40-31 halftime lead on the way to a 78-69 triumph.

"I thought we executed offensively the best we had all season," said GC head coach Matt McCullough, whose squad returned to .500 overall and in NJCAA Division II Region 20 (6-6, 2-2). "We missed a lot of open looks that we're capable of making. If we can execute the same way and more shots fall, we can become more effective and efficient."

Nehemiah Johnson (six rebounds) was 6-for-7 from the field in 19 minutes as he tallied 12 points to become the fourth Laker in double figures. Lenny Smith just missed double digits with nine points on 4-of-9 shooting as the Lakers shot just over 48 percent from the field.

McCullough praised Kos' performance in his first start of the season.

"He's 6'8” with a lot of skill and ability," McCullough said. "Our staff knows what he is capable of, and he knows what he's capable of. We expect these types of performances moving forward from him."

The Lakers have a challenging week ahead, playing at Jamestown (NY) Community College (9-5) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Prince George’s Community College (14-4, 4-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
