The Belt Construction Group has made a $50,000 gift to the Garrett College Foundation's Athletics Capital Campaign, which will be used to name the new wrestling room in the renovated 700 Building.

"We like what's going on at Garrett College and we're excited to be part of this capital campaign," said Carl "Buck" Belt, Jr., president of the Cumberland-based company. "Athletics can help create a stronger, more vibrant, and engaged community. Sports can also bring communities together."

"We appreciate the Belt Construction Group's ongoing engagement with the College," said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College's president. "The company has been involved in multiple Garrett College campaigns, as well as supporting community initiatives across the region."

"We like to give back to a community that's been so good to us," said Belt. "Our employees also give a lot back to the community, and we're very proud of that."

While his company is based in Allegany County, Belt noted that "a lot of our employees live in Garrett County."

The Belt Construction Group was founded in 1962 by Carl Belt, Sr. Buck Belt worked Saturdays at the company while in high school, worked there as his schedule allowed through his college years, and started full-time with the company in 1968. He took over management of the company upon his father's death in 1977.

Buck Belt's wife, Jane, continues to work at the company on a part-time basis. Jane Belt is also vice chair of the Allegany College of Maryland Board of Trustees.

GC's Athletics Capital Campaign, just announced in June, has raised $380,000 on a $1.1 million campaign goal. The campaign objective is to help defray costs on the multi-million renovation project that will provide much-needed space for the College's expanding intercollegiate athletics program.

Garrett has increased from four to eight athletic teams since 2018, with the addition of wrestling, women's and men's soccer, and women's softball.

The 700 Building renovation will provide a locker room complex, athletic training and rehabilitation space, and coaches offices for the four teams that play on the adjacent multi-purpose turf field. The Belt Construction Group Wrestling Room will provide a dedicated space for the wrestling program, which has become one of the Gulf Atlantic District's top teams.

"The community support for this campaign has been incredible," said Cherie Krug, executive director of the Garrett College Foundation. "To date, 14 of the 19 naming opportunities have been reserved."

Individuals and businesses interested in securing any of the remaining naming opportunities can connect with Krug at 301.387.3100 or by emailing cherie.krug@garrettcollege.edu.
