Braxton impresses in regular-season debut
Redshirt freshman nets 18, including game-winning 3-pointer
Frederick, MD – Reserve Jamire Braxton, playing his first official college men's basketball game after redshirting last season, drained a game-winning 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining last Wednesday night as Garrett College edged host Frederick Community College, 76-75.
"He's worked extremely hard from last year to this year," GC head coach Matt McCullough said of Braxton. "We knew he could help us. It was just a matter of time until he was able to contribute in a game. I'm happy for him being able to help us get a big win."
Frederick had taken a 75-73 lead with 16 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Ryan Tientcheu. Tientcheu had a chance to answer Braxton's trey, but his 3-pointer missed and the Cougars couldn't do anything with Dayvon Dorsey's offensive rebound right before the final buzzer.
The contest was the season-opener for both teams.
"First games are always tough – add to that we were on the road against a divisional opponent," observed McCullough. "We were having to make in-game adjustments."
The Lakers trailed, 41-37, at the half, but held Frederick to 34 points after the break.
"I thought our defensive effort in the second half was pretty good," said McCullough. "We made it harder for them to get the same opportunities they had in the first half." Braxton finished with 18 points, going 6-of-10 from the field and making all four of his free throws. Laker Isaiah Gill had a game-high 19 points while Nehemiah Johnson (11 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals, two blocks) and Donovahn Keyes (14 points) also reached double figures for the Lakers.
GC's Keyonta Johnson (six points) matched Johnson with a team-high 10 rebounds and also dished out three assists.
Bryson Boyd (18 points, 13 rebounds) and Thierry Patchou (17 points, 12 rebounds) each posted double-doubles for Frederick. Kylan Johnson (14 points, five assists) and Gabriel Jones (13 points) also reached double figures for the Cougars.
SUNY-Niagara 98, GC 94
Cumberland, MD – Chioke Marshall scored a team-high 22 points Saturday afternoon as nationally ranked SUNY-Niagara erased an eight-point deficit with a 17-5 closing run.
"They're the 16th-ranked team in the nation for a reason," said GC head coach Matt McCullough. "They just made more plays than we did down the stretch. Effort-wise, though, we did a lot of things really well."
Jaedon Hutchinson added 18 points, Steyvon Jones and Mustafa Eskici each scored 11, and Bryce Wejuli and Abu Dukaray contributed eight points apiece for SUNY-Niagara.
Laker Carmello Myles had game-highs in points (23) and rebounds (14) while also coming up with three steals. GC's Isaiah Gill had 17 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while teammate Nehemiah Johnson (11 points, 11 rebounds) checked in with a double-double.
Niagara (4-1) hit 31-of-46 free throws, outscoring Garrett (1-1) by 15 points at the foul line.
"We put them on the line too many times," observed McCullough, who had no problem finding the silver lining in the loss.
"Niagara is one of the better teams on our schedule and we had a chance to beat them," said McCullough. "We've got room for improvement on both ends of the floor, but there were some positive things we could take from this game."
