Byrd rallies ACM to victory over Lakers
Trojans overcome 12-point halftime deficit to down local rival
Alex Byrd scored a team-high 27 points Saturday afternoon as Allegany College of Maryland rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to earn a 97-94 men’s basketball victory over host Garrett College.
Jaylen Brown scored 19 points with eight assists and Darrien Ponder scored 16 points for the Trojans, who climbed out of a 58-46 halftime hole to beat the Lakers. As usual with GC-ACM encounters, the contest came down to a final shot as Laker Donavahn Keyes’ attempt at a buzzer-beating 3-pointer just missed.
“That was another of those classic Garrett-Allegany games that always seem to be decided by one or two possessions,” said GC head coach Matt McCullough.
ACM (4-2) began its comeback by scoring the first seven points of the second half to get back in the game.
“We knew they were going to come out with lot of energy in the second half,” said McCullough. “Both teams were making plays throughout the second half – they just made a few more than we did.”
Laker Cory Harper, who scored a game-high 28 points, was 7-for-13 from the 3-point line. Keyes had 21 points, while Keyonta Johnson (13 rebounds, five assists) and Lenny Smith tallied 16 each for Garrett.

GC’s Luis Botelho was almost a fifth Laker in double figures, finishing with eight points and seven assists.
While the Lakers (2-4) have dropped three straight, those losses came to teams with a combined 14-6 record.
“We feel Harford, Potomac State and Allegany are three of the top teams in our league,” McCullough said of GC’s last three opponents. “ We’ve proven we can hang in there and battle with the best.
“There are lots of areas where we can improve and get better,” continued McCullough. “There’s a lot of positive energy in the locker room. Even with the tough losses, there are positives that come with that. We’ve got the right mindset moving forward.”
PSC 104, GC 79
Antonio Pollard led six Catamounts into double figures last Tuesday night as Potomac State College of West Virginia University used a 65-point second half to pull away from the host Lakers.
Peter Quaye scored 18 points, Joell Young and Rodney Vilsaint added 16 each, Jordan Taylor (12 rebounds) contributed 15 points, and RJ Greene chipped in 11 points for PSC (6-2).
Keyonta Johnson (nine rebounds, five assists, three steals) and Cory Harper each scored 16 points to lead the Lakers. Dechaun Reed had 12 points while Lenny Smith and Donavahn Keyes scored 11 each for GC.
