North East, MD – Etta Harris had a match-high 23 kills as seventh-seeded Cecil College overcame a slow start to eliminate 10th-seeded Garrett College, 23-25, 25-11, 25-17, and 25-19, last Tuesday night in an NJCAA Division II Region 20 women’s volleyball tournament play-in.

"Number 10 [Harris] definitely showed up and made it hard for us to defend against them," said GC head coach Brittany Jackson.

Hannah Beck notched match-highs in assists (38) and aces (eight), and Kendra Watters produced a match-high 18 digs to pace the host Hawks.

Cecil won for the 10th time in 12 matches since losing to Garrett (10-8) in an early-season four-setter. The Hawks (15-7) then proceeded to upset second-seeded College of Southern Maryland in a three-set quarterfinal sweep before dropping a 17-15 decision to third-seeded Hagerstown Community College in the deciding fifth set of their region semifinal.

The Hawks avenged their regular-season loss to Garrett with a much-improved offensive attack during the play-in, finishing with a 45-30 advantage in kills and a 14-4 edge in aces.

Emma McCord and Mia Barios had 10 and eight kills, respectively, to lead the Lady Lakers while Chloe Heeter finished with a team-high 28 assists.

Garrett improved its regular-season winning percentage for the third straight year, and notched consecutive winning seasons for the first time in recent memory. The Lady Lakers also reached double-digit wins for the second season in a row.

"Overall it was a good year. We’re progressing and keeping up with the talent in our conference," Jackson said. "I think we definitely could have gone farther in the playoffs."
