Chesapeake College sweeps Lady Lakers

Garrett College drops 3-setter after tough Penn Highlands loss

The Chesapeake College women's volleyball team methodically wore down host Garrett College, 25-18, 25-16, and 25-21, Friday night as the Lady Lakers seemed to show the after-effects of a five-set loss a day earlier.

"We just didn't show up for today's match," said GC head coach Brittany Jackson. "We weren't ready to play. We didn't bring our energy and we didn't bring that skill level we showed in other matches."

A day earlier, the Lady Lakers erased a 2-0 set deficit before dropping a five-setter to host Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. The Black Bears pulled out a 20-18 win in the fifth set, sending GC into the Chesapeake match on a low note.

The Lady Lakers ran out to an 8-5 lead in the first set against Chesapeake, but the Skipjacks responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead for good. Emily Gunther (six kills, 10 digs) put down two kills, Bianca Potts (five kills) had a kill, and Alyssa Berneski (team-high 10 kills) delivered an ace during the Skipjack surge.

Chesapeake broke out to 4-0, 7-2, and 14-4 leads while dominating the second set. The Skipjacks built a 5-1 lead in the third set, but GC responded with a 5-0 run that Janiya Burton (five kills) finished with three straight kills to give the Lady Lakers a 6-5 advantage.

"Janiya did get on a roll," said Jackson. "She was the hot hitter and she was making good plays, both with her blocking and her hitting."

The Lady Lakers still led by a point, 13-12, when Chesapeake went on a 3-0 spurt as the Skipjacks took the lead for good. Berneski tied the game with a middle kill and Zoe Fretterd (game-high 22 assists) threw in consecutive aces during the set-turning run.

Brookelyn Keller had a team-high seven kills and Daphne Harman added five for the Lady Lakers (2-10 overall, 1-6 league). Middle hitter Aiyana Yoder finished with a team-high 15 digs.

"Fifteen digs as a middle hitter is tremendous," said Jackson.

Jackson said the Lady Lakers need to develop short memories.

"As soon as we make an error, four more come to follow ," observed Jackson. "We can't shake off a bad error – and then the other team goes on a run."

Chesapeake improved to 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference.

The Lady Lakers play at Potomac State College of West Virginia University Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Penn Highlands 3, Garrett 2
