Garrett College inducts seven into PTK
Bowser salutes 'elite corps of individuals' brought into honor society

Garrett College's PTK Alpha Omicron Phi Chapter inducted seven new members last Wednesday night. Pictured, left to right are: Chapter co-Advisor Dr. Michele Buday-Murray, Samantha Dolan, GC Chief Academic Officer Professor Christa Bowser, Emma Sheffield, Madison Kitzmiller, Joshua Brobst, Musulyn Pinney, Haedin Hilton, GC President Dr. Richard Midcap, and Chapter co-Advisor Dr. Bryan Lewis.
Quality trumps quantity in many instances. One such occasion was last Wednesday's Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony in the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College.
Seven inductees were honored, including six who were able to attend the induction ceremony.
"You will count six and may say to yourself, 'Where are the rest?'" Professor Christa Bowser, GC's chief academic officer, said to the audience.
"Academic excellence is seldom a matter of quantity, but rather a matter of quality," continued Bowser. "The students we see here this evening are that small, but academically elite, corps of individuals who have earned and maintained high grade-point averages in their college studies."
Bowser said the inductees demonstrated "inherent ability... commitment and just plain hard work" in gaining entrance to GC's Alpha Omicron Phi Chapter of PTK. Bowser said a strong support network – parents, spouses, children, employers, and friends – was also important to the success of the inductees.
The seven inductees – Joshua Brobst (Frostburg), Samantha Dolan (Accident), Haedin Hilton (Accident), Madison Kitzmiller (Gormania, WV), Musulyn Pinney (Paynesville, Liberia), Isabella Ross (Oakland), and Emma Sheffield (Frostburg) – were also ably supported by the PTK chapter's advisors, Dr. Michele Buday-Murray and Dr. Bryan Lewis.
Garrett College's Alpha Omicron Phi chapter is part of the largest honor society in American higher education. PTK has more than 1.3 million members in over 1,100 chapters. PTK has chapters in all 50 states as well as U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan.
