The Arbor Day Foundation has designated Garrett College as a Tree Campus for the second consecutive year.

"This is a meaningful achievement for Garrett College," said Mountain Laurel Garden Club Conservation Chair Linda Harris, whose club applied for the designation on behalf of the College. "According to the Foundation, this designation demonstrates the College's commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and community engagement while contributing to a greener and healthier campus environment."

Garrett College staff and students have been collaborating with the Mountain Laurel Garden Club as part of an ongoing initiative to transform the College's physical environment with a series of campus plantings.

"This has been such a meaningful partnership," said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College's president. "We appreciate everything Mountain Laurel Garden Club has done in collaboration with the College. This initiative has had a very positive impact on our campus."

Harris commended Western Region Urban Forestry Coordinator Katherine Phillips and Maryland Forest Service Garrett/Allegany Project Manager Melissa Nash for their assistance, including helping to "choose great plants for our landscaping projects."

The Arbor Day Foundation's mission is to "inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees." The Foundation was launched in 1972 during the centennial of the first Arbor Day observance in 1872.
