Baltimore, MD – Garrett College has been recognized for the seventh straight year by a Maryland state agency for its efforts in promoting a workplace culture of health.

Maryland Healthiest Businesses (MHB), an office within the Maryland State Department of Health, recently announced its 2025 “Healthiest Maryland Businesses”. The College was recognized at the Exemplar Level, which is MHB’s highest rating.

MHB defines Exemplar Level businesses are those that “address wellness through all four strategies: policy, programming, benefits, and environment support.”

Janis Bush, Garrett College’s director of human resources, said the College has emphasized making wellness activities fun. Today’s “Walk It Out” event – with employees taking a walking tour of the campus, with prizes to incentivize the activity – is one example. Another is the annual “Souper Bowl” during Super Bowl Week that’s built around hot soup during the cold winter.

GC also sponsors multiple employee lunch buffets featuring healthy entrees as well as a couple of sweeter activities, including bringing local ice cream vendors to campus to provide an afternoon treat.

“It’s great to have so many options to encourage overall wellness,” said Bush. “We strive to encourage each other to be happier and healthier.”

Bush noted that the College’s facilities – including the Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex (CARC) and the Mosser Road Heritage Trail – provide unique opportunities for fitness activities. GC provides each full-time employee with a free CARC membership.

“We’re working to create a culture where an increasing number of employees are aware of the importance of their overall wellbeing on their health,” said Benjamin Morris, the College’s CBIZ-provided wellbeing coordinator.

Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College’s president, said he “appreciates seeing the emphasis we’ve put on establishing a workplace culture of health recognized at the state level for seven consecutive years.”

“We’re committed to emphasizing the value of a healthy workplace,” added Midcap.
