Garrett sweeps Ocean County College

Lakers finish 3-5 on ambitious pre-conference baseball trip

Myrtle Beach, SC – Lance Vickers went 2-for-4, drove in three runs, and scored a run last Thursday as Garrett College completed its Myrtle Beach baseball spring trip by defeating Ocean County (NJ) College, 9-4.

"It was a good way to end the trip," said GC head coach Eric Hallenbeck. "We finally got some big hits with guys on base. During the five-game losing streak, we left a lot of guys on base.

"I think our freshmen were pressing a bit," added Hallenbeck. "Against Ocean County, they slowed the game down and didn’t try to do too much in those spots."

Vickers had a run-scoring single as part of GC’s six-run seventh, which gave the Lakers a 9-2 lead. The Lakers also defeated Ocean County, 15-5, as Vickers had a hit, scored one run, and drove in another while walking twice.

The Lakers (4-9) finished 3-5 on their spring trip. Colby Schmitz, Cooper Blackburn, and Alphonso Westbrook all earned pitching victories for GC during the trip.

GC took command of the Ocean County opener with a nine-run first inning as four Lakers – Schmitz (run, three RBI), Erick Batista (two hits, two runs), Steven Laurence (three hits, run, two RBI), and Easton Rhoten (four runs, two RBI) – delivered run-scoring hits.

The Lakers broke a 2-2 tie in the nightcap with a fourth-inning run as Chance Ritchey doubled, took third on a sacrifice, and stole home. Angel Oquendo contributed two doubles and two runs while driving in one run in the second Ocean County contest.

Ryan Ushock went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI for Ocean County (4-4) in the doubleheader against GC.
