GC bounces back from CSM loss, tops Frederick
Lady Lakers split Saturday tri-match to improve record to 8-5

Frederick, MD – Garrett College escaped Saturday’s tri-match at Frederick Community College with a women’s volleyball split.
Lelia Iafeta had a team-high 13 kills to lead the College of Southern Maryland in its 25-23, 25-14, and 25-16 win over the Lady Lakers. GC, however, rebounded to sweep host Frederick Community College, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-19.
Paola Chirino had a match-high 22 digs and Cierra Shoop recorded a team-high 19 assists against CSM (12-9 overall, 10-2 Region 20), but the Lady Lakers (8-5, 7-5) struggled to find any consistency.
“Paola kept the team alive with her serve receive and defense,” said GC head coach Brittany Jackson. “Chloe [Heeter] had a smart setting game, but we’re struggling with hitting.”
Heeter (19 assists), Shoop (seven kills), and Chirino (11 digs) all played well again as GC swept the host Cougars. Emma McCord (six kills) contributed five aces while Mia Barios (four kills), Brenna L’Hommedieu, April Etheridge, and Shoop each had three block assists.
While the Lady Lakers defeated Frederick (6-9, 5-8), they are struggling to match the performance they put on in beating two-time defending region champion Harford Community College two weeks ago.
“Performance-wise, we are struggling to hit and be offensive,” said Jackson. “We seem to be in a rut.”
