GC, GCPS, Chamber host 'The Buck Starts Here'
November 4th workshop will focus on strategies to pay for college
Garrett College, Garrett County Public Schools, and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to provide families a free, interactive workshop to identify strategies to pay for college.
The workshop – aptly entitled “The Buck Starts Here” – will take place Wednesday, November 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College. The event is tailored for families of students in grades 7–12, but is open to anyone interested in more information on funding a college education.
While the Garrett College Office of Financial Aid is coordinating the workshop, it isn’t limited to prospective students planning to attend Garrett College.
“We want to help all families with school-age children understand their options when it comes to paying for college,” said Andrew Harvey, Garrett College’s director of financial aid. “That includes scholarships, need-based aid, savings plans, work-study opportunities, and loans. The goal is to help students achieve their educational goals without a mountain of student debt.”
Harvey – who has earned the Certified Financial Aid Administrator (FAAC®) designation through the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators – said the earlier students and their families begin planning how to pay for college, the more options they are likely to have when it’s time to start college.
“Saving wisely and planning early make it more likely students and their families will have the resources necessary when it is time for a student to start college,” said Harvey, who also serves as vice chair of the Delaware-D.C.-Maryland Association of Financial Aid Administrators.
Harvey said the collaborations with Garrett County Public Schools and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce are helping spread the word about the workshop.
“We appreciate GCPS and the Chamber partnering with the College on this event,” said Harvey. “They each have great communication channels to help us ensure families know about, and register for, the workshop.”
