GC graduate Wolf earns Regents Scholarship

Southern Garrett alum awarded full scholarship to Frostburg State

Teresa Wolf

Garrett College graduate Teresa Wolf has been awarded the prestigious Gross Regents Scholarship. She will be using the scholarship at Frostburg State University, where she will pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in human resource management.

Teresa Wolf has a passion for matching the right employees with the right employers. The Garrett College graduate will be pursuing that passion on a full scholarship to Frostburg State University, courtesy of a University System of Maryland Gross Regents Scholarship.

Wolf said she felt "a little bit of shock" when she was notified that she had earned the Regents Scholarship.

"I hadn't expected to get it," said Wolf, who graduated from Garrett College in May with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) and was honored as the graduate with the highest GPA.

"What I really felt was complete relief. I'm just happy I might not have to get a third job," said Wolf, who worked throughout her time as a Garrett College student at both Simon Pearce and the Garrett County Arts Council's Gallery Shop.

Wolf will pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in human resource management at FSU. The Southern Garrett High School alum is the first GC graduate to earn a Regents Scholarship since 2010.

Each Maryland community college may nominate up to three students to be considered for the University of Maryland Regents Scholarship. Ashley Ruby, Garrett College's director of the learning commons and academic success, said Wolf's honor is all the more impressive given the extremely competitive selection process.

"Teresa emulates a successful balance of academic achievement, an earnest work ethic, and high moral character," said Ruby, who oversees the Regents Scholarship application process for Garrett College.

"Her membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, her work at Simon Pearce and The Gallery Shop, and her unwavering commitment to family made her an outstanding candidate for the Regents Scholarship," added Ruby. "I think Teresa's moxie was immediately recognized by the scholarship selection committee."

Wolf said her work at Simon Pearce played a key role in guiding her toward a prospective career in human resources.

"I've been there since I was 16," explained Wolf. "I've been able to see a lot about how management and employees interact. I saw many different management styles. I was able to see how some management styles worked for some employees, but not for others.

"I realized that I was fascinated with how a company chooses and trains its employees," added Wolf. "I have seen how hiring the right person can change the entire dynamic of a team and push them to work harder, and I have seen the impact proper training can have on an employee."

Wolf said working at The Gallery Shop has provided her with a wide range of experiences and allows her to put the knowledge she is learning in school into practical use.

"I'm managing the day-to-day functions, helping out with events, and managing most of our systems," said Wolf.

Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College's president, said Wolf was highly deserving of the Regents Scholarship.

"Teresa is an academically gifted student with an incredible work ethic who has a clear plan for using her baccalaureate degree within her long-term career goal," said Midcap. "Everyone at the college is so proud of Teresa's accomplishments. We know she is going to be a star in the human resource field."

Students approaching graduation with a 3.8 GPA or higher may apply for the Regents Scholarship program during their final semester at Garrett College.
