GC kicks off school year with fun, fellowship
Activities meant to help students bond with classmates, employees

The Mountain Coaster was one of the most popular activities during last Friday's Garrett College Student Welcome Event, co-sponsored by the Wisp Resort and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce. The first week of the new academic year at Garrett College featured a little bit of everything – including...
- The annual welcome event at the Wisp Resort, sponsored by the Wisp and Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, featuring free lunch, mountain coaster rides, ziplining, and miniature golf;
- a 300-person rock-paper-scissors playoff; and
- free Kona Ice for everyone.
The fun and frivolity had a serious purpose: helping new and returning students make connections with both fellow students and the College's faculty and staff. By all accounts, it was an immense success.
"This group of students is really engaged and excited," said Rich Schofield, GC's director of student development.
The first barometer was last Tuesday's New Student Orientation (NSO), which took place in the Offutt Theatre.
"We had that place packed," said GC Student Activities Manager Drew Catone.
That's where this year's incoming freshmen participated in the rock-paper-scissors playoff.
"The purpose was to get students up, moving around, and engaging with other new freshmen," said Ashley Ruby, director of GC's Learning Commons and academic success.
NSO also introduced new students to available services and academic support as well as the staff responsible for providing those services.
"It's important that students were introduced to the people behind the services," said Dr. Robert "JR" Kerns, dean of student affairs.
The Kona Ice truck was on campus last Wednesday, with 88 students and 29 employees taking advantage of the opportunity. The week culminated with Friday's welcoming activities at the Wisp.
"The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce was delighted to welcome Garrett College's new students with this special event," said Holly Lane, project and groups manager for the Chamber. "With more than 100 students in attendance, we had the chance to highlight the fun activities our community offers while helping those who may be away from home for the first time feel connected and supported.
"Our hope is that after graduation, these students will choose to make Garrett County their home and contribute to our growing workforce," added Lane.
"We were able to enjoy good food and bonding with our teammates," said sophomore Luis Botelho, who plays on the men's soccer and basketball teams. Botelho said the highlight for him was riding the Mountain Coaster "for sure."
"It's a chance to get to know other students and get out of the dorms," said sophomore volleyball player Brenna L'Hommedieu, another Mountain Coaster lover.
Audrey Harvey, a freshman volleyball player, also enjoyed the Wisp- and Chamber-sponsored event.
"It was nice to get out and meet students who aren't a part of our team," said Harvey. "It's a beautiful day out – and it's a good time to have this event before the weather turns cold."
Shawn Rooks, a freshman men's basketball player, said he already loves the area.
"There's a bunch of great stuff to do up here," said Rooks, noting the day also provided an opportunity "to just hang out and do some team bonding."
