GC Learning Commons launches spring '26 semester

College staff, faculty highlight student-centered supports and activities

Games, giveaways, and free food were a huge part of last Tuesday's "Laker Launch Party," but the Garrett College Learning Commons event also had a more academic objective.

"We want to welcome students to the new semester, provide some free school supplies, and introduce them to staff members and all the available resources," said Dr. Ashley Ruby, GC's Learning Commons and academic success director.

Students could learn about advising, academic support, student clubs, financial aid opportunities, and available mental health support, among other topics.

The financial aid table had free highlighters, pens, and chances to win a "Super Bowl Snack Pack" (won by Kei Mumma) but Financial Aid Counselor Erica Hook was also trying to sneak in an important message.

"Fill out the FAFSA, whether you think it will help or not," said Hook, referencing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. "You might be surprised that you qualify for federal student aid."

Not to be outdone with cool gifts, the Learning Commons was giving away a Smart TV (won by Hishon Myles), an LED speaker (won by Everett Nichols), and ear buds (won by Jaden Skipper) while making sure students knew where to go when facing academic and personal challenges. Like others, Technical Services Librarian Julie Mozelewski wasn't above using food to get out the message.

"We have caramel and buttered popcorn," noted Mozelewski. "It's a big favorite with the students – and with employees, to be honest."

Laker BINGO and Pop A Shot Basketball were just two of the games available to students who stopped in.

"It's a good idea," GC student Izzy Shafer said of the launch party. "It gives everyone something to focus on other than just straight school."

"It just brings everyone together," added student Brenna L'Hommedieu. "It's different."
