Garrett College’s Brenna L’Hommedieu (25) blocks a kill attempt by Potomac State College’s Elliana Mosby during PSC’s women’s volleyball sweep last Wednesday night.
All women’s volleyball sweeps are not created equal.
That statement clearly applies to Potomac State College of West Virginia University’s sweep against host Garrett College last Wednesday night.
The Catamounts prevailed, but not without a fight. PSC outlasted the Lady Lakers, 25-22, 35-33, and 26-24. PSC overcame deficits of at least four points in each set, were forced into overtime in the last two sets, and stared down two set points in the middle set.
“The match against Potomac was amazing,” said GC head coach Brittany Jackson. “The talent displayed by both teams was very exciting to watch.”
PSC pulled out the victory in large part due to its deep and talented stable of hitters, who helped the Catamounts finish with a 49-35 advantage in kills. Elliana Mosby and Sarah Iman (team-high four aces) tied for match-high in kills with 13 each while Christianna Sledge and the appropriately named Ashton Spiker added nine and seven kills, respectively.
PSC fell into an early 9-5 hole in the first set, but took the lead for good on consecutive Mosby kills that gave the Catamounts a 13-11 edge. Mosby also came up big on Garrett’s first set point in Set 2, putting a kill into the far left corner to tie the set at 28-28.
Victoria Lester (match-high 42 assists) tapped a shot wide to give GC a 33-32 lead, but Sledge threw down consecutive kills, and Mosby finished off the set with another kill.
Brenna L’Hommedieu (match-high five aces) had consecutive aces as GC raced to a 7-1 lead in the third set, but the Catamounts regrouped to build a 24-22 lead that put them on the brink of victory. Cierra Shoop (team-high nine kills) responded with a tip and a dink to get the Lady Lakers even at 24-24.
Spiker’s point-scoring block and Iman’s ace sealed the win for the Catamounts.
“It still stings to lose, but I was very proud of the team’s effort,” said Jackson. “I hope to see that level of play and competition Tuesday against Cecil.”
Both Garrett College (10-7 overall, 8-7 region) and PSC (13-5, 11-4) are headed to the NJCAA Division II Region 20 tournament.
GC, seeded 10th, plays seventh-seeded host Cecil College Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in a play-in to the Region 20 quarterfinals. The winner plays second-seeded College of Southern Maryland in Saturday’s Elite Eight at Cecil College.
The Lady Lakers beat Cecil in four sets early in the season, but Cecil (13-6, 9-6) has gone 9-2 since that loss to GC.
Fourth-seeded PSC will take on fifth-seeded, two-time defending champion Harford Community College (13-7, 9-5) in Saturday’s regional quarterfinals.
