GC men split, finish opening road trip 2-2
Lakers take down Penn Highlands, defeated at Harford CC
Bel Air, MD – Unbeaten Harford Community College took the lead for good with a 7-0 run to start the second half Friday night as the Owls men’s basketball team defeated short-handed Garrett College, 82-77.
"I was proud of our effort," said GC head coach Matt McCullough. "It was a challenging week for our program and we played a very good opponent in Harford on the road."
McCullough noted the Lakers were playing without four key players and lost a fifth to injury during the game.
"We gave ourselves an opportunity to win in what was very much of a next-man-up mentality," said McCullough. "It was a great effort, but we are not in a moral victory mindset. We expect to perform at a high level, do things the right way, and get results in the win column, which is how we will approach each task this season."
Harford’s Jacobi Harper started the second-half run with a layup that created a 44-44 tie. Justus Stanton’s jumper put the Owls in front, and Tony Pope (team-high 24 points) drained a 3-point to give the hosts a 49-44 lead.
Cory Harper’s 3-point pulled the Lakers within 49-47, but Harford responded with another 7-0 run to build a 56-47 cushion and never led by less than four points the rest of the way.
GC’s Donovahn Keyes scored a game-high 25 points while teammates Keyonta Johnson (20 points, game-high 10 rebounds), Cory Harper (12 points), and Nehemiah Johnson (10 points, nine rebounds, three assists) also scored in double digits. Harford, however, beat the Lakers with better balance, with the Owl reserves outscoring GC’s bench, 27-5.
Garrett – which edged host Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, 86-84, last Tuesday night – finished a season-opening road trip with a 2-2 record.

Johnstown, PA – Keyonta Johnson (10 rebounds) and Donovahn Keyes each scored 22 points last Tuesday night as the Lakers erased a 13-point deficit in the final six minutes while defeating Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.
"We found a lineup that was clicking in that stretch and stuck with them through the end of the game," said GC head coach Matt McCullough. "We started making the hustle plays and just found a way to make one more play than they did."
Isaiah Gill was the third Laker in double figures with 11 points.
Byron Lavender led Penn Highlands with 22 points while Desmond Handon, Jr. (16 points), Ahmad Boone (12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals), and Jayvien Brumbaugh (11 points) also reached double figures.
