GC notches first win in impressive style

Slick, Ward each tally two goals in 9-0 romp against Beaver

Hamborsky

Nevaeh Hamborsky had a goal and two assists Saturday afternoon as Garrett College's women's soccer team claimed a 9-0 victory over Penn State Beaver.

Each of Garrett College's first eight women's soccer games were decided by two goals or less – but that stretch left the Lady Lakers still seeking their first win of the season.

That search ended Saturday afternoon against Penn State Beaver.

Laci Slick and Jorjalynn Ward each scored two goals as Garrett's second-year squad overwhelmed visiting Penn State Beaver, 9-0. The Lady Lakers used the win to improve to 1-6-2.

"We've been in every game this season. It's nice to be on the winning side," said GC head coach Brandon Jackson. "We hope we can carry this momentum forward through the rest of the season."

Nevaeh Hamborsky (two assists), Natalie Warne (one assist), Ruby Molloy (one assist), Cheyenne Zack, and Courtney Milner also scored goals for the Lakers. Danielle Brobst added two assists and Sky Leasure contributed one helper for the Lady Lakers, who dominated throughout the contest.

Garrett finished with a 59-0 edge in shots, a 28-0 advantage in shots on goal, and a 14-0 lead in corner kicks.

Beaver didn't manage a single offensive foray in the first half, but the game remained scoreless for the first 14 minutes. That changed when Molloy sent a shot into the lower right corner of the Beaver goal to give GC a 1-0 lead.

Warne scored unassisted eight minutes later, and Milner tallied off a Leasure feed just one minute before halftime as the Lady Lakers built a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Johnna Collins earned the shutout in her first start in goal.

"She's worked so hard in every training session and she's been such a motivation for the other players," Jackson said of Collins. "It was my obligation to get her that first start. I expect to see her playing more minutes moving forward."
