Wye Mills, MD – Garrett College shook off a five-set loss to Carroll Community College, sweeping Chesapeake College on Saturday afternoon to split a women's volleyball tri-match.

"Basically, it was a repeat of last year – except this time we didn't win," said GC head coach Brittany Jackson, referring to last season's dramatic, five-set victory over Carroll.

Emily McElwaine had a match-high 15 kills and a team-high four aces to spark Carroll in its 25-20, 15-25, 19-25, 25-15, and 16-14 win over the Lady Lakers. Lynx teammates Haleigh Hodges (team-high 15 digs) and Savannah Disney (17 assists) each added 10 kills as Carroll avenged last season's loss to the Lady Lakers.

Carroll finished with a 46-27 lead in kills, 65-42 advantage in digs, and 38-22 edge in assists.

"We didn't play poorly, but if you can't execute the ball you can't win," Jackson said of the Lady Lakers' dearth of offensive kills against Carroll.

Garrett's Paola Chirino finished with a match-high 23 digs while Chloe Heeter (six kills) and Karen Cuellar each registered 10 assists. Heeter and Mia Barios tied for the team lead in kills.

Jackson said the loss didn't carry over to GC's 25-21, 25-19, and 25-21 sweep of the Skipjacks.

"The team wasn't too discouraged with what happened," said Jackson. "It may have lit a little bit of a fire on the team to execute and play a little bit harder and a little more consistently. Our bench also rallied behind us and definitely kept us up against Chesapeake."

Chirino had 10 digs and four aces while Barios and Brenna L'Hommedieu each recorded eight kills against Chesapeake. Heeter finished with 19 assists.

McHenry, MD – The Garrett College women's volleyball team aced the test against the Titans.

The Lady Lakers served 16 aces last Wednesday night while sweeping Community College of Beaver County, 25-19, 25-19, and 25-13. Karen Cuellar had a match-high seven aces while Mia Barios contributed five aces and a team-high eight kills.

"We served very well," said GC head coach Brittany Jackson, whose team won its second straight and third in four matches. "Overall, it was a good, solid performance."

Cuellar had four aces in the opening set, which was tied at 17 before Brenna L'Hommedieu's middle kill started an 8-2 GC run to claim a set that included consecutive Barios aces. Chloe Heeter, Emma McCord, and Cierra Shoop each contributed aces as the Lady Lakers opened the second set with a 9-2 surge to take the lead for good.

The Lady Lakers used a 12-1 surge – including back-to-back aces from Barios – to build a 14-4 lead in the third set. Cuellar finished the final set with consecutive aces.

Jackson said the enthusiasm supplied by GC's reserves played a key role in the match, which was slightly ragged at the start.

"The team bench was essential," said Jackson. "Our team energy was low the last couple of matches. Energy is contagious – when we have it, we look great."
