GC stays competitive, but just comes up short

Lady Lakers drop 2-1 decisions to AACC, LaRoche University

McHenry, MD – It took a booming, 35-yard shot from Taylor Ramsdell on the left wing with 16 minutes remaining for NCAA Division III La Roche University to edge Garrett College’s women’s soccer team, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.

GC finished with a 20-17 edge in shots and was even in corners, indicating the competitiveness of the match. Garrett goalkeeper Kayla Moore saved seven shots for the Lady Lakers, who dropped a pair of tight, 2-1 decisions last week.

Ramsdell floated her shot into the upper, right-hand corner of the net with 16 minutes remaining as La Roche – which plays in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference – escaped with a win.

"Coach [Brandon Jackson] is doing an unbelievable job with Garrett," said La Roche head coach Miguel Lozano, a two-time AMCC Coach of the Year, who addressed the Lady Lakers after the match. "I told them I’d be happy to welcome any of them [at La Roche] after they finish their careers here."

"I want our women to play the best competition they can," said Jackson of scheduling La Roche. "La Roche is a good program in a really good Division III conference."

Scoreless at intermission, the Redhawks (2-3) tallied early in the second half after several minutes of sustained offensive pressure.

Lorelei Schorr sent a corner kick directly at Moore, who pushed the ball out of bounds to set up another corner kick. The Redhawks changed their strategy on the ensuing corner kick, with Schorr sending the ball to Zaida Gonzalez on the left wing.

Gonzalez put a shot into the far, upper right-hand corner of the goal to give La Roche a 1-0 lead with 22 minutes remaining.

"We practice set pieces like that off corner kicks all the time," said Lozano. "This was one of those days where it paid off."

The Lady Lakers replied with substantial offensive pressure, with one push resulting in a free kick that Cara Stout took with 23 minutes remaining. The GC sophomore put the 35-yard free kick into the upper right-hand corner of the net to tie game.

"We practice set pieces like that off corner kicks all the time," said Lozano. "This was one of those days where it paid off." "It just felt surreal," Stout said of the goal, which resulted in a wild Lady Laker celebration. "I was in awe, if I’m being honest. I just loved how we celebrated as a team."

"We practice set pieces like that off corner kicks all the time," said Lozano. "This was one of those days where it paid off." Ramsdell’s goal gave the Redhawks their margin of victory. Stout, however, said she feels the Lady Lakers are building something special in Year 2 of the program.

"It’s so amazing," said Stout, noting both the expansion of the team roster and the fan base. "This year we have extra players when people get tired and we’re getting so much support. The quality of play this year – it’s like night-and-day compared to last year. I know we’ve lost most of our games, but we’re going to put together some wins."

AACC 2, Garrett 1

McHenry, MD – Tina Tinelli scored unassisted midway through the second half last Thursday as the Riverhawks pulled out the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference victory.

Riverhawk Rhyan Uzarek scored 22 minutes into the match, but GC’s Victoria Kovazh responded with the tying goal with seven minutes remaining in the opening half.

AACC finished with a 20-11 edge in shots and 12-4 advantage in corners. Garrett goalkeeper Sara Tabuena finished with eight saves.
