Students enrolled in the Medical Billing and Coding program at Garrett College are approaching the final phase of their training as they complete their capstone projects, showcasing the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the program.
Upon successful completion, the students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam, a nationally recognized credential offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
The course was delivered fully online through Zoom, providing students with the flexibility to participate from virtually anywhere.
"This format proved especially beneficial, allowing several students to continue their studies seamlessly even while relocating or traveling," said Doug Beitzel, Garrett College's program coordinator. "Despite the remote format, the program maintained its high academic standards and rigor."
Beitzel said GC "commends the dedication and perseverance of the current cohort and looks forward to their continued success on the national certification exam and in their future careers."
Throughout the program, students gained comprehensive knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, diagnostic and procedural coding (ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS), healthcare reimbursement systems, and regulatory guidelines. Emphasis was placed on real-world application, precision, and attention to detail – critical competencies for success in the medical coding profession.
"The demand for trained medical billing and coding professionals continues to grow," said Beitzel. "According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical records and health information specialists is projected to increase by 8 percent from 2022 to 2032.
"This growth is driven by the ongoing need for accurate coding and documentation across healthcare systems," Beitzel continued. "Certified professionals are sought after in hospitals, physician offices, insurance companies, and remote work settings, making this a flexible and in-demand career path."
Garrett College is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2026 Medical Billing and Coding program. Scholarship funding is available to assist eligible students with program costs.
"With the convenience of online learning and strong employment prospects, this program offers an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to begin or advance a career in healthcare administration," said Beitzel.
