GC women take first loss at SUNY-Niagara
Lady Lakers fall to 16th-ranked foe after topping Anne Arundel
Sanborn, NY – Mackenzie Owens scored a game-high 22 points Sunday afternoon as 16th-ranked State University of New York (SUNY) Niagara defeated visiting Garrett College, 90-57, to hand the Lady Lakers their first loss of the women’s basketball season.
Makayla Thomas added 20 points and Krystal Smith posted a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds for the unbeaten Thunder Wolves (8-0). Niagara built a 25-19 lead after one quarter, expanding its advantage to 45-29 at the half.
Da’shai Morton-Hall led Garrett (3-1) with 14 points, while Renee Timbers (11 points) and Hailey Newsome (10 points, eight rebounds, two steals) also reached double figures. Daisya Brown (six rebounds, six assists) and Makaela Braxton-Brown chipped in with eight points each.
GC 83, AACC 63
Catonsville, MD – Da’shai Morton-Hall scored a game-high 37 points last Wednesday to spark the Lady Lakers in their NJCAA Division II Region 20 opener against Anne Arundel Community College.
Morton-Hall also had six rebounds, five steals and three assists. Garrett, which scored 30 second-quarter points to build a 48-34 halftime lead, came up with 19 steals to power its transition game.
Manuela Perez de Castro (eight rebounds, six assists) scored 16 points and Hailey Newsome (game-high six steals) added 11 points for Garrett.
Ayannah Gorham scored 22 points and hauled in 26 rebounds for winless AACC (0-5, 0-2).
