GC wrestlers win Gulf Atlantic District title
Anderson, Cannaday claim individual titles; 5 Lakers in finals
Garrett College head coach David Wingate (with plaque) and his Laker wrestlers won the Gulf Atlantic District championship on Saturday with all 10 Laker participants advancing to the NJCAA national championship tournament.
Scranton, PA – Nicholas Anderson and Cameron Cannaday each won individual titles Saturday and five Lakers reached the finals, providing the depth needed to claim Garrett College's second Gulf Atlantic District team title in five years.
Anderson earned the 125-pound title and Cannaday took the 157-pound crown as GC edged Andrew College, 160-155, in the team standings. Runner-up finishes by Noah Obinna (149), Kollin Sullivan (174), and Elijah Boston (285) and a third-place performance from Camden Hull (141) also played key roles in the team title.
Anderson and Cannaday dominated their weight classes, with none of their matches going the distance. Each produced critical team bonus points by pinning their finals opponent – Anderson stopping Lackawanna College's Spencer Crawley at 4:01 and Cannaday pinning Lackawanna's Connor Ondeck with 48 seconds left in the third period.
"I knew we needed to get bonus points where we could get them," said GC head coach David Wingate. "The pins in the finals really sealed the deal. All of our guys were really hunting bonus points every match."
Brooks Smith (165) and Liam DeBaugh (197) had fourth-place finishes while Keon Gavin (133) and Sundiata Chavis (184) each finished fifth for the Lakers.
For the first time in program history, all 10 of GC's wrestlers qualified for the NJCAA national tournament, which takes place March 6-7 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Defending team champion Andrew College was the only squad with three individual titlists, but those were the only three finalists the Georgia team produced.
"I knew it would be a race against Andrew College," said Wingate of the team competition.
Obinna dropped a tough, 10-5 decision to Xavier Arner of Northampton Community College in the 149-pound final, and Sullivan was on the short end of a 7-4 score to Bergen Community College's Alex Gossin in the 174-pound title match.
Lackawanna's Brodie Daugherty pinned Boston in the 285-pound finals.
