Laker sophomore Drayk Bunn registered three pins Saturday on the way to the 197-pound championship at Garrett College's "Defend the Lake" Open.

Bunn pinned Scott Winter (Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology) in 1:25, dropped Bobby Ranger (unattached) in 3:19, and dispatched Max Damian (Patrick & Henry Community College) in 4:13, spending just under nine minutes on the mat to claim the crown.

"Drayk wrestled some good competition," said GC head coach David Wingate.

Bunn said the Lakers have continued to improve throughout their early season competitions.

"The team has really been pulling together, with everyone pitching in to make each other better," said Bunn, who ran his personal record to 7-1 with his three weekend wins.

Three GC freshmen – Nicholas Anderson (125), Camden Hull (133), and Brooks Smith (157) – all finished second in their respective weight classes.

"Those three are really setting the bar for our freshmen right now," said Wingate.

Seven teams, including the host Lakers, participated in the tournament. The other participating teams were Gulf Atlantic District rivals Thaddeus Stevens (PA) College of Technology, Rowan (NJ) College South Jersey Gloucester, Patrick & Henry (VA) Community College, and Sussex County (NJ) Community College, along with Northeast District members Jamestown (NY) Community College and Niagara (NY) Community College.

Wingate said the early season matches will have late-season implications, with key district match-ups from this weekend playing a major factor in district tournament seedings.

The Lakers will participate in the Shenandoah Invitational at Shenandoah University on Saturday (10 a.m.) and in a dual meet at Frostburg State University next Wednesday (7 p.m.).
