GC's Smith goes 3-1 in Alvernia Quads
DeBaugh, Hull each split four matches against 4-year squads
GC 165, Brooks Smith
Reading, PA – Laker wrestler Brooks Smith went 3-1 as Garrett College took on a quartet of four-year programs Saturday in the Alvernia University Quad.
Smith registered 165-pound pins against Ryan Lepore (Alvernia), Joshua Estrada (Marymount University), and Wyatt Kinne (Southern Virginia University). His only loss came in a first-period pin against Albright College's Beknazar Baiyshbekov.
"Brooks wrestled well," said David Wingate, Garrett's head wrestling coach. "He was executing smart moves instead of just going out there and pushing the pace. I think we're in a good spot with him for the district tournament."
Liam DeBaugh, who picked up victories in two different weight classes, and 141-pounder Camden Hull each went 2-2 for the Lakers.
"Liam wrestled smart and composed. We're working on his conditioning, but I think we're getting to a good spot with him, too," said Wingate.
"This was probably the best performance I've seen from Camden," Wingate added. "He beat a couple of really good kids, and he had a couple of fifth-year seniors he had to wrestle."
GC 125-pounder Nicholas Anderson and Kollin Sullivan (174) had the only Laker wins against Albright College, while Noah Obinna earned a 149-pound pin against Southern Virginia.
GC lost the team competitions to Albright, 40-7; Alvernia, 42-6; Marymount, 39-15; and Southern Virginia, 32-22. Garrett had an 18-16 lead against Southern Virginia with four bouts left, but three straight wins clinched the Knights' team triumph.
Wingate said the competition against the four-year programs was just what the Lakers needed as they prepare for the Gulf Atlantic District tournament February 14th.
"We never back down from any invitations to wrestle anyone," said Wingate. "The most important thing for us is the [district] tournament. Two of those schools are nationally ranked, and a couple of the kids we wrestled are ranked Top 10 in the country. It was really good competition."
