January JCLS to focus on Earth-observing system

Dr. Wind is lead research scientist with Science Systems and Applications, Inc.

Dr. Galina Wind, Garrett College’s Joan Crawford Lecture Series presenter for January, will speak on the evolution of the Earth-observing system that began when Explorer 6 captured the first image of Earth from space in 1959.

"I will discuss our Earth-observing system from that historic day to the present state of the art," said Wind, who will present next Wednesday, January 17th at 6 p.m. in the recital hall of the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College.

"Some spacecraft orbit the Earth as close in as 380 miles," noted Wind, who earned a doctorate in atmospheric and oceanic science from the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). "Others perform observations from as far away as a million miles."

Wind will also discuss "the processes we use to transform satellite images into information directly relevant to our daily life."

Wind received Bachelor of Science and Master of Computer Science degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2000 and 2002, respectively. She also earned a Master of Science in atmospheric and oceanic science from UMCP prior to completing her doctoral work.

Wind has a wide range of research interests from modeling applications to radiative transfer to remote sensing involving a wide variety of satellite and aircraft instruments.

Garrett College’s faculty created the Joan Crawford Lecture Series in honor of the dynamic educator Joan R. Crawford.

Crawford, who died in 2010, served the College community for more than 30 years, including serving as the head of the humanities division and director of enrollment. After her retirement, Crawford was named Professor Emerita.

The Joan Crawford Lecture Series of presentations are offered free of charge, and the public and community members are invited to attend.

All presentations from the Joan Crawford Lecture Series will be available to view online through the College's Facebook page. The lectures will be live streamed and recordings will be posted shortly after the event.
