Garrett College student Musulyn Pinney speaks to last year's "An Evening Abroad" attendees. Pinney, who is from Liberia, prepared food from her homeland as part of the annual event, which highlights GC's international students. This year's event takes place on Wednesday, November 19th at 6 p.m. in the CARC gymnasium.

Garrett College's November 19th Joan Crawford Lecture Series will feature the College's 22 international students, who represent 11 different countries. The 6 p.m. event, titled "An Evening Abroad," will take place in the College gymnasium.

Those in attendance will have an opportunity to sample popular cuisine from each student's home country, including poutine, fried plantains, and potato ash. Students will also share interesting facts about their countries as well as popular activities and music.

Countries represented include Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Netherlands, Philippines, Spain, United Kingdom, and Venezuela.

"Our international students help the College create a richer, more culturally diverse environment," said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College's president. "Garrett College has a long history of seeking out and nurturing international students, with strong support from our local community. This event is just one strategy we use to bring together our students and our community."

Garrett College's offices of admissions, institutional compliance, and human resources are all event co-sponsors.

The Joan Crawford Lecture Series honors dynamic educator Joan R. Crawford, who died in 2010 after serving the Garrett College community for 30 years in a variety of faculty and staff roles. JCLS presentations are offered free of charge, and the public and community members are invited to attend.
