Job Fair highlights local career opportunities

Fair includes 33 businesses, most with full-time position availability

Career opportunities abounded at last Tuesday's 34th annual Job Fair, which was co-hosted by Garrett College and Garrett County Business Development at the Edwards Community Aquatic and Recreation Complex gym.

Thirty-three employers were available to meet with the 160 attendees – and more than two dozen employers listed full-time employment opportunities in the job fair flyer. More than half of the 33 also had part-time jobs available, including summer jobs for younger job seekers.

"This event continues to make a meaningful impact by bringing together employers from across Garrett County and surrounding communities, offering a wide range of job opportunities," said Kaitlyn Glotfelty, Garrett College's director of community and professional education. "The Job Fair serves youth and adults alike, connecting entry-level and experienced workers with seasonal, part-time, and full-time positions."

Employers covered a wide variety of career fields, including aerospace, education, public health, mental health, manufacturing, HVAC, welding, landscaping, law enforcement, emergency services, and sales. They had the opportunity to meet with a wide range of qualified candidates.

"This year, we've had more professional adults come attend, which has been great," said Donna Bittinger, Garrett College's director of workforce training.

Dr. Kimberly Govi, GC's coordinator of professional development, said the fair's success was due to more than just a thriving local job market.

"The success of the job fair reflects the strengths of our partnerships across the county," said Govi. "Everyone works together to support employment and opportunity in Garrett County and beyond."

Lt. Michael Sigmund – commander of the Maryland State Police (MSP) Barrack W in McHenry – said MSP has a wide variety of career opportunities available to local residents.

"We're looking for people who want to be sworn police officers, but we're also looking for people who have interests in related areas – emergency dispatch, crime-scene technician, and information technology, just to name a few," said Lt. Sigmund.

Lt. Sigmund noted career MSP opportunities may be broader than most people think.

"This is a career that has a lot of opportunity for growth," he said. "MSP offers good pay and benefits, retirement, and health insurance."

Steve Green's High Mountain Sports also participated in the event. Green was looking for potential employees in several areas, including sales.

"For salespeople, as long as you can look me in the eye and talk, I can teach you about the products," said Green, who said he also needed "a bike mechanic and possibly someone who can do sales and drive our vehicle."

Baltimore Crisis Response, Inc. (BCRI) also attended with opportunities for both mental health clinicians and peer support specialists.

"The most important quality in peers is compassion and life experiences that allow them to assist people in complex life circumstances," said Tiffany Rains, BCRI's peer support specialist for Garrett and Allegany counties.

Glotfelty said the job fair fits neatly with Garrett College's mission.

"Engaging with and supporting our community is at the heart of everything we do, and helping individuals secure sustainable employment is incredibly rewarding," she said.
