Lady Lakers wear down Harford, 77-58
Garrett takes the lead for good with 6-0 run to end 1st half
Da’shai Morton-Hall
Bel Air, MD – Garrett College took the lead for good with a 6-0 run to end the first half and then gradually pulled away from host Harford Community College Friday night as the Lady Lakers posted a 77-58 women’s basketball win.
"That was a lot of fun," said GC head coach JT Lewis. "You can see our team starting to share the ball and move without the ball better. Our pressure on the ball was again a big factor for us. We ended up forcing a good amount of turnovers [30], which leads to points."
GC’s Da’shai Morton-Hall (six rebounds, two steals) tied for game-high scoring honors with 19 points; Carly Wilt added 17 points while going 7-for-9 from the field. Jameriah Butler (six rebounds, three assists) contributed 14 points and Hailey Newsome (six rebounds) tallied 11 points for the Lady Lakers (3-1).
Miangel Thompson (five steals, four rebounds) put the Lady Lakers ahead to stay, 32-31, on a layup with 1:17 remaining in the first half. Morton-Hall followed with a layup and Wilt finished the run with a jumper that made it 36-31 at the break.
"We still have a lot to work on," said Lewis. "We had too many turnovers [24] – but you can see if we keep working, we will be a special team come second semester."
Caryne Nelson scored 19 points while Amya Goodsell (12 points, 11 rebounds) finished with a double-double for Harford.
