Lady Lakers ace Beaver County netters
Garrett College sweeps Titans behind strong serving effort
The Garrett College women's volleyball team has aced its most recent test.
The Lady Lakers served 16 aces Wednesday night while sweeping Community College of Beaver County, 25-19, 25-19, and 25-13. Karen Cuellar had a match-high seven aces while Mia Barrios contributed five aces and a team-high eight kills.
"We served very well," said GC head coach Brittany Jackson, whose team won its second straight and third in four matches to improve to 4-2. "Overall, it was a good, solid performance."
Cuellar had four aces in the opening set, which was tied at 17 before Brenna L'Hommedieu middle kill started an 8-2 GC run to claim the set that included consecutive Barrios aces. Chloe Heeter, Emma McCord, and Cierra Shoop each contributed aces as the Lady Lakers opened the second set with a 9-2 surge to take the lead for good.
The Lady Lakers used a 12-1 surge – including back-to-back aces from Barrios – to build a 14-4 lead in the third set. Cuellar finished the final set with consecutive aces.
Jackson said the enthusiasm supplied by GC's reserves played in a key role in the match, which was slightly ragged at the start.
"The team bench was essential," said Jackson. "Our team energy was low the last couple of matches. Energy is contagious – when we have it, we look great."
The Lady Lakers play Saturday in a tri-match against Carroll Community College (1 p.m.) and host Chesapeake College (3 p.m.).
