Columbia, MD – Sophomore goaltender Kayla Moore stopped all six shots she faced Saturday afternoon as Garrett College blanked host Howard Community College, 3-0, in the Lady Lakers' women's soccer season opener.

"Kayla was quick off the line on Howard's two most serious goal-scoring opportunities," said Zach Ward, who was coaching his first game for Garrett College. "The other shots she faced were further out."

One reason Moore faced so few dangerous shots was the Lady Lakers' defensive effort. Coach Ward praised the leadership provided by sophomore defender Jorjalynn Ward, who also scored GC's first goal just 4:04 into the game.

"Jorjalynn did a good job organizing the defense, which included three first-time defenders with her on the line," said Coach Ward.

Ada White tallied at the 13:30 mark to give GC a 2-0 lead and Jacquelyn Jeffreys added an insurance goal with 26:39 remaining in the contest for the Lady Lakers. All three goals were unassisted.

Garrett finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots, a 15-6 margin in shots on goal, and took the game's only corner kick.

"We let the game come to us and we limited our mistakes," said Coach Ward. "We just set out with the goal to compete for 90 minutes, which we did."

Howard fell to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference.

The Lady Lakers host Harford Community College (2-4, 2-0) Thursday at 3 p.m. in their home opener.

Howard 7, Garrett 0

Columbia, MD – Denny Mora scored four goals Saturday afternoon while Bryan Barrientos, Tesfaye Yeabsira, and Donnie Frayer each added a goal and an assist as Howard Community College spoiled Garrett College's inaugural men's soccer game.

Jonathan Sanchez stopped all four shots he faced while playing all but 29 seconds in goal for Howard.

"They had a world-class goalie," GC head coach Jonathan Price said of Sanchez, noting unbeaten Howard (4-0, 3-0) "may be the best team in the region."

GC's Wyatt Hull had five saves while playing the first half in net and James Helmintoller-Quantz stopped three shots in 27:03 before the game was called due to lightning.

Price noted that patience is the key for the Lakers' newest intercollegiate athletics program.

"We had stretches where we played with them pretty evenly," said Price. "We were able to get everybody into the match and see them perform. There were a lot of positives that came out of the match."

Price highlighted the work of defenders J.M. Holland and Adrian Laba.

"J.M. and Adrian were both very effective defensively," said Price.

The Lakers play their first-ever home men's soccer game Thursday at 5 p.m. against Harford Community College.
