Lady Lakers claim another 3-2 win
GC takes decisive fifth set against Frederick in tri-match split

La Plata, MD – It's not a great idea to go five sets with this year's Garrett College women's volleyball team.
Frederick Community College was the latest opponent to learn this lesson. GC outlasted the Cougars, 18-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-25, and 15-7, Saturday as the Lady Lakers (8-6 overall, 6-3 Region 20) improved to 4-1 in five-set matches.
"I'd like for us not to be a fifth-set team," remarked GC head coach Brittany Jackson. "If it happens, it's nice to know we have a good percentage going for us. I think the sense of urgency is there when we get into those fifth sets."
While Jackson would prefer to finish off opponents earlier, she said her team's fifth-set performances are particularly impressive given Aiyana Yoder is the only sophomore on the squad.
"I'm very proud of where we're sitting," said Jackson. "We have a freshman-dominated squad that's holding its own. Everyone's doing their part. It's definitely a big improvement from last year [4-14 record] and shows the team being built right now has the potential to keep building and growing."
The Lady Lakers split Saturday's tri-match at the College of Southern Maryland, dropping a 25-20, 25-22, and 25-18 decision to the Hawks (8-10, 6-3).
Thelma McGee and Brenna L'Hommedieu (three aces) led the way against Frederick, posting 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Chi Lalk had eight kills and eight digs, while Yoder contributed seven kills.
Kdynze Salinas and Paola Chirino each had 10 digs, while Karen Cuellar notched 34 assists with four aces against FCC.
Garrett never got untracked offensively against CSM, finishing with just 27 kills. Lalk led the way with nine kills and L'Hommedieu added seven. Salinas and Chirino again tied for the lead in digs, this time with 11 each, and Cuellar had 25 assists.
The Lady Lakers have another tri-match this Saturday, playing Baltimore City Community College (0-5, 0-3) at 1 p.m. and host Howard Community College (2-9, 2-9) at 3 p.m.
Garrett 3, Westmoreland 0
Youngwood, PA – Thelma McGee had 12 kills and Chi Lalk (two aces) added nine kills as the Lady Lakers downed Westmoreland County Community College, 25-19, 25-16, and 25-19, last Tuesday.
Karen Cuellar registered 27 assists and three aces for Garrett, which completed a home-and-home sweep of Westmoreland. Paola Chirino had 17 digs for the Lady Lakers.
