Frederick, MD – Hailey Newsome converted a three-point play with 4:31 remaining last Wednesday night to put the Lady Lakers ahead to stay as Garrett College pulled out a 52-50 women's basketball victory over Frederick Community College in the NJCAA Division II Region 20 opener for both teams.
Newsome's three-point play started a 7-2 run that included clutch hoops from Da'shai Morton-Hall and Jameriah Butler as GC built a 52-48 lead. Heaven Murray's two free throws with 1:35 remaining pulled the Cougars within 52-50, but Frederick turned the ball over three times in the final 86 seconds as the Lady Lakers held on to win.
"Our defensive intensity at the end was key," said Garrett head coach JT Lewis, who switched his team into a man-to-man defense down the stretch. "Jameriah Butler put on a lot of ball pressure that forced turnovers and helped us at the end."
The host Cougars also had issues throughout the game with GC's pressure defense, forcing Frederick into 33 percent shooting from the field.
"Our diamond press caused some problems for them and forced some turnovers," said Lewis. "Just being so deep and playing a lot of people is helpful with the defensive style we're trying to play."
GC freshman Carly Wilt had a team-high 14 points and four rebounds, while Morton-Hall contributed 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Newsome finished with nine points, a team-high eight rebounds, and two assists.
"Carly is someone you can definitely rely on – she's very consistent," said Lewis. "She does a great job finding open spots and knocking down shots."
Newsome, meanwhile, is "the battery that keeps us going," according to Lewis.
"When there is a big shot that needs to be shot, she's not scared to shoot it," he said of Newsome.
Frederick built an eight-point, second-quarter lead, but the Lady Lakers used baskets by Marrah Milbourne and Miangel Thompson to cut the deficit in half by intermission. Wilt's jumper broke a 29-29 tie and Morton-Hall followed with a jump shot that gave GC a 33-29 lead midway through the third quarter, which ended with the Lady Lakers holding a 35-34 advantage.
The lead changed hands six times in the fourth quarter, the last time on Newsome's critical three-point play.
While Lewis is pleased with his squad's defense, he said the offense has not yet reached its potential.
"Once we start making those easy layups and open shots, I can see our points going up," said Lewis.
Murray scored a game-high 21 points and Maylee Regan added 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for Frederick (0-1).

Cumberland, MD – Azriel Hall scored a game-high 23 points while teammates Ava Bull (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Atarah Walker (10 points, game-high 19 rebounds) each had double-doubles Saturday afternoon for the victorious Thunderwolves (4-1).
Jameriah Butler had a team-high 15 points and Marlynn Milbourne added 11 for the Lady Lakers (2-1).
Niagara, which had a 20-18 lead after one quarter, held GC to four second-quarter points while building a 38-22 halftime advantage.
GC 77, Point Park 62
Hailey Newsome added 13 points and Gianna Michaux contributed 12 for the Lady Lakers, who took the lead for good late in the first quarter on a pair of Michaux free throws. Wilt scored eight straight points as part of a 14-2, second-quarter GC run that gave the Lady Lakers a 31-17 cushion.
Point Park closed the third quarter with a 9-0 run that pulled the guests within 56-48, but Wilt and Marrah Milbourne each drained 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Lakers regain control.
