Lady Lakers run past Allegany women

Newsome takes advantage of transition opportunities in win

Hailey Newsome put on a fourth-quarter transition clinic, converting seven fast-break chances into baskets Saturday afternoon as she scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the final period of Garrett College’s 78-50 women’s basketball win over visiting Allegany College of Maryland.

“Hailey’s great in the open court,” said GC head coach JT Lewis after his squad improved to 4-2. “She does a good job pressing the ball up top. When she works hard on defense, she’s often rewarded with layups.”

GC was also looking for Newsome to break down court when others created transition opportunities. Garrett College finished with 24 assists on 34 made baskets as Gianna Michaux set the tone early, assisting on four first-quarter hoops as the Lakers built a 23-13 lead.

“I like to share the ball,” said Michaux. “That’s how I play – I’m a playmaker. Our game plan was to share it more.”

Lewis used the game against ACM to play his full roster, often substituting five at a time. GC’s deep squad led by as many as 32 points (63-31) before taking their collective foot off the gas in the fourth quarter.

“Our defense converted into offense all game long,” said Lewis. “When we work hard on defense, it translates into points.”
