Arnold, MD – The Garrett College women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season in a Saturday afternoon tri-match, rallying past host Anne Arundel Community College in five sets after dropping the opening match to Hagerstown Community College.

Hagerstown downed the Lady Lakers, 25-14, 25-9, 20-25, and 25-17. GC rebounded to top the Riverhawks, 25-19, 26-28, 20-25, 25-21, and 15-12.

GC head coach Brittany Jackson said her squad came out tight, but began playing more aggressively in the final two sets against AACC.

"One thing I need to constantly remind them is you can't play scared in this game," said Jackson. "I told them to just keep hustling – run down every ball and play aggressively."

Jackson said she made one strategic change down the stretch against the Riverhawks.

"We started our first set against them running a 6-2, but we went back to 5-1 with just one setter to keep our players fresh," said Jackson. "That gave some of our top hitters a break so they could concentrate on playing the front row and getting some time off from the back row."

Brenna L'Hommedieu (16 kills), Thelma McGee (12 kills), and Chi Lalk (12 kills) each ended up with double-digit kills against AACC. L'Hommedieu and McGee were particularly efficient, with just five and two hitting errors, respectively.

Karen Cuellar finished with 30 assists and Paola Chirino came up with 30 digs against the Riverhawks.

Lalk (eight kills, two aces) and Chirino (16 digs) led the Lady Lakers in the loss to Hagerstown.

"We took a while to warm up in sets one and two," Jackson said of her squad's performance against Hagerstown. "We just have to come out with that higher intensity and fire to play right away."

GC's home opener is against Westmoreland County (PA) Community College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
