Laker wrestlers sweep Williamson College, RPI
Bunn notches a pair of pins at 197 pounds to highlight GC's sweep
McHenry, MD – Garrett College swept its two dual wrestling matches Saturday at the University of Maryland Baltimore County's Retriever Duals.
The Lakers defeated Williamson College of the Trades, 36-23, and routed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 48-18. James Bounds (125 pounds), Tyberious Clayton (174), Drayk Bunn(197), and Jacob Beeman (285) each went 2-0, with Bunn notching a pair of pins.
Six other Lakers – Matt Lombardo (133), Brody Byrd (141), EJ Guy (149), Landon Rhodes (157), Linden Amtoung (165), and Raynard Kanu (235) – each earned one win.
"We're getting to be a lot more competitive in matches," said GC head coach David Wingate, whose squad improved to 2-5 in dual meets.
Guy and Jacob Keating (285) each placed second in their respective weight classes a week earlier in the Thunderwolves Open at Niagara County Community College.
The Lakers are off until January 6, when they will compete at the Fairmont State University individual tournament.
"Hopefully everyone will take the three-week break and relax, hang out with their families, and get some rest as we look toward the rest of the season," said Wingate, who hopes to have his squad peaking for the Gulf Atlantic District championships on February 17th.
